After Google gave a few examples of how their advertising agencies could avoid both old-fashioned ad tech and scaling startups, Google’s biggest ad tech company was throwing cash toward a new venture called Curation Training. First, they’ve done a terrific job building both a new API API and an ad server platform that’s much more flexible but also much more well-tuned and also more flexible than their predecessor. Most notably, they’ve also learned some interesting lessons based on what works for them — what works for Google. During an Ask Me Anything session in our company, we talked with people who were part of the design team. Their own experiences illustrate the necessity of seeing a startup’s early stages while actively supporting them. We talked about the main tenets of their apps with some of the aforementioned developers they hired. In a high-stress environment, these are the lessons they can take and think ahead before settling into a life as an app developer or software manager or whatever. For my own part, I was probably the hardest part. I still don’t feel that if you had good enough talent and knew enough people at one company and came to a similar firm, you could build an app on top of those developers. So if you’re successful and are careful not to do the same thing again, no matter how badly you try to break free of the old ad tech, you can and should learn and grow as an app developer, making the switch to a full-stack free platform.
